Gamification of the Classroom
What makes video games addictive? Why do kids spend hours and hours playing them, choosing to play them rather than go out side, watch TV or many other activities? Is there something about them that we can capture and use to make our classrooms more engaging, and more desirable to our students.
Enter the concept of gamification. First lets get a definition, gamification is the concept of applying game design elements in non-game contexts. So, what does that mean? It means that we take elements like earning points and leveling up, or unlocking achievements, or being at the top of a leader board and apply it to our classroom. The benefits come from the sense of engagement and perseverance we can enable in our students.
